SGT Membership And the Benefits
The objects of the Society of Glass Technology are to encourage and advance the study of the history, art, science, design, manufacture, after treatment, distribution and end use of glass of any and every kind. These aims are furthered by meetings, publications, the maintenance of a library and the promotion of association with other interested persons and organisations
Membership is open to individuals, companies, associations or institutions.
Personal Members
are part of a international network of specialists in their particular field of glass. This wide network operates through personal contact, meetings, workshops and publications. New graduates are introduced to this network and to one another through specialist seminars.
Fellowship Recognition is given to individual achievement. Fellowship of the Society is awarded to members who have reached prescribed levels of attainment in the business of glass and associated industries and for recognised contributions to the science and technology of glass. Fellows are entitled to use the designatory letters ‘FSGT’.
In the United Kingdom the Society supports the personal development of members to the status of Chartered Engineer.
Corporate Members The objectives of the Society bring direct benefits to industry and institutions associated with glassmaking. A corporate member nominates representatives of its company to benefit from the privileges enjoyed by a Personal Member. Membership Benefits
The Society of Glass Technology is a non-profit making organisation serving a worldwide membership. This allows the SGT to bring together the research of academics and the needs of glass manufacturers and artists, to encourage the cross fertilisation.
We publish journals and text books; organise meetings and conferences on glass related topics; coordinate the activities of special interest groups and technical committees; and provide a communication framework geared to the needs of the glass community.
So how do you benefit by becoming a Member?
Publications
Journals - Within the membership fee the Personal Member you will receive one of the two highly respected journals published by the Society, or both at a small premium.
Our two bimonthly journals are:
European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part A: Glass Technology - covering glass making, glass fabrication, properties and applications of glasses or glass ceramics and other related topics. In addition to refereed papers, Glass Technology contains SGT and industry news together with conference proceedings and review papers.
European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part B: Physics and Chemistry of Glasses - the leading international, peer-reviewed publication for research scientists in the fields of glass structure and properties.
Abstracts - The Abstracts sections of both journals are considered to be the most comprehensive in the glass community. The society’s library collection and abstract database is available to all members.
Books & Conference Proceedings – As a Member, our publications are available to you at a substantial discount. You may have a manuscript that we can publish for you! We can print on demand so that audience size is not a limitation. Members also receive discounts off texts published by other publishers.
Meetings
Annual Meeting - attendance offered to members at a discounted price.
Local sections- including the USA and India, meet for lectures and for social events including outings, quizzes and dinner dances.
One daymeetings are arranged by the technical committees so you can discuss topical issues of the day in semi-structured meetings.

Certified Reference Materials – We offer you at a discount our range of standard glass, sand, limestone and dolomite Certified Reference Materials for analysis and calibration. These can be bought at our online store.

Web access to archives – you will receive free access to a wealth of information via the archived copies of our journals and proceedings through Ingenta Connect (password obtained via the SGT office).
Abstract Database - The SGT staff can search our abstract database, based and for a small fee provide copies of the papers. This service is only available to Members.
Information Source - The SGT staff and the website can guide members to information from a variety of sources including our list of consultants.
Through its link with the Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals the SGT can help members gain internationally recognised qualifications including Chartered status, subject to meeting criteria.
Personal Development – is encouraged by offering prizes, certificates and sponsorship – submit an undergraduate project for the Oldfield Award, be considered for the Glass Sellers Award, be recognised for an exceptional oral or poster presentation, or apply for the prestigious SGT Fellowship. We offer personal development certificates for attendance at our meetings.
International Representation – The SGT is founder member of the International Commission on Glass and the European Society of Glass Science and Technology. You therefore have a voice on the international stage either indirectly or by becoming involved yourself.
