AGC/Michael Cable Glass Engineering Student Prize

The Society of Glass Technology has established a Memorial Lecture and a student prize entitled the “AGC Glass Engineering Student Prize” in memory of Professor Michael Cable of the University of Sheffield and his contributions to practical glass making. AGC Inc. are the sponsors of both the student prize and the Memorial Lecture. The Memorial Lecture is held biannually and the Student prize will be awarded in the intervening years.


Candidates are being sought for the next award of the “ACG Glass Engineering Student Prize”.
The Award is made up of a cash prize of £500 as well as covering registration and accommodation costs for an international conference on glass. The winner will attend the conference to give a paper and be presented with the award.
Criteria:
• The Applicant can be of any age.
• The Applicant should be working full or part time in the glass industry.
• The Applicant should be continuing their education with affiliation to an educational institute.
• The Applicant’s work should be centred around glass engineering and technology.
• There is no limit to the size of the company or institution in which they work.
• Applicant must be able to evidence a significant contribution to the field - critically with an industrial and / or applied context.

Requirements for application
The submission should include:
• An application form, including

  •      Information on the applicant and industrial and/or academic sponsor
  •      A brief summary of work and education being undertaken and a statement stating how this award is important to their future in the glass industry (max 500 words)

• A letter providing a statement of support which outlining the applicants work and its impact. The letter should be signed by their industrial sponsor (a senior company representative) and their academic supervisor.
• One piece of evidence to support the supervisor’s statement should be submitted. This evidence could be in the form of: a peer reviewed paper; a summary of the key findings in an accepted thesis; a patent application; evidence of contribution towards a product launch; evidence of contribution to a product’s advancement to market; aA report detailing work on product development; Slides or a video of a presentation given at a conference; any evidence of a contribution that significantly advances knowledge, expertise, training, manufacture or application of glasses.

The SGT Board of Fellows will institute an award selection committee that will review the applications and decide the winner of the
